Responsive Classroom

Our Community School uses Responsive Classroom as our positive behavior and community building platform. This program is essential in building a respectful, community centered school. Part of this program focuses on the idea of logical consequences. This means that if a child makes a poor choice, the consequence is not punitive, rather it is logical. If a child is found to have bullied or harassed another student, depending on the degree and intensity of the situation, a logical consequence would be to read a book about other cultures, races, or lifestyles, depending on the original transgression. The offending student would then answer reflective questions, hopefully giving them more insight to the power of words and actions. Parent conferences would also be required, as would a meeting where the accused and the accuser face one another and have an adult-facilitated conversation on what has taken place. Most times, when a student sits across the table from a child they may have hurt with their words, meaningful and heartfelt conversations take place.
