Annual Support Campaign As a parent, family member or maybe even a friend of an OCS student, you know that Our Community School is a small learning community where parents and educators work together to create a rigorous curriculum within a nurturing environment, where children are respected and achieve success. Some of our students say they love OCS because "Everyone works as a community and cares about each other," and that "We don't just study things, we do them." Some of our parents say they believe in OCS "because it is a school where a child is inspired to love learning" and "at OCS, parents are partners in creating a great education." There are, however, a couple of things you probably don't know: Public funding and Average Daily Attendance only covers a portion of what it costs to educate each student. The budget gap is the difference between funds that OCS receives from the state based on Average Daily Attendance ($7437/student) and the actual cost of the quality education offered to your child/children at OCS ($7829/student). California is rated 46th in the nation in per pupil funding. The gap for each child at OCS averages $392 per student. 100% parent/family participation is particularly important when we solicit foundations for grants. That is why we are asking for your support. The Annual Support Campaign is the major Board led fundraiser conducted at the beginning of each school year. The money raised during the Annual Support Campaign is used for a significant portion of the school’s operating expenses, including funding educational enhancements, equipment purchases, academic program resources, and computers. Each year OCS depends on annual tax-deductible gifts from family members and friends, but they are even more crucial this year since the Governor is poised to slash the education budget in the State of California.
